There’s something so special about the handmade gifts children create — especially when they’re made with love (and often a bit of glue and glitter too!). At Simply Sunshine, we believe Mother’s Day is the perfect time to help little ones make keepsakes their mums will treasure for years to come.

Here are some sweet and simple ideas that are perfect for early learners and guaranteed to melt hearts.

Handprint Canvas Art

Tiny hands don’t stay tiny for long. That’s why handprint art makes such a timeless gift. Whether it’s a bouquet of handprint “flowers,” a heart shape, or just their little print with a message like “You’ve got my heart,” this one’s always a winner.

Tip: Use pastel colours or let the children choose their own paint – the personal touch is what makes it special.

“My Mum and Me” Photo Frame

Help children decorate a wooden or cardboard photo frame with paint, stickers or drawings. Pop in a photo of the child with their mum (or mother figure) and you’ve got a personalised present that’s both adorable and meaningful.

If a photo isn’t available, a little drawing of the two of them together works just as well.

Mother’s Day Interview

Ask children questions like:

  • What does your mum do that makes you laugh?

  • What’s your favourite thing to do with Mum?

  • What’s Mum really good at?

Write down their answers (as they say them!) and add a drawing. The results are often funny, sweet — and something Mum will keep forever.

Thumbprint Jewellery Dish

Using air-dry clay, help children shape a small dish and gently press their thumbs into the centre. Once dry, paint it and add a message like “Love You Mum” around the edge. It’s perfect for holding jewellery, trinkets or keys.

Love You to Pieces Heart

Cut out a large heart from cardboard and let children glue torn tissue paper, buttons, or little puzzle pieces all over it. Add a message like, “I love you to pieces!” for a cute play on words.

At Simply Sunshine, we know it’s the love behind the craft that counts most. Whether it’s on the fridge, the mantle or tucked into a memory box, these keepsakes will be cherished long after Mother’s Day has passed.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible mums, grandmothers and carers in our community!
