Book Week is nearly here, and at Simply Sunshine Early Learning we are spending August getting to know our favourite literary characters, building book week activities for children that go far deeper than a single costume day.

Why Character Exploration Matters

Getting to know a character properly, their personality, their choices, and their journey, helps children build genuine comprehension skills rather than simply memorising a story. Our book week activities for children are designed to help children:

– Understand character motivation and feelings

– Practise retelling and sequencing a story

– Build empathy by imagining life through another character’s eyes

– Grow their vocabulary through rich, character-driven language

At Simply Sunshine Early Learning, we choose a small group of much-loved characters each August and really dig into their stories together.

Our Book Week Preparation Program

Character Hot Seat

Children take turns pretending to be their favourite character, answering simple questions from friends about how the character might feel or what they might do next.

Story Sequencing Cards

Picture cards from favourite stories are shuffled and children work together to put the story back in the right order, building comprehension and cooperation.

Costume Planning Corner

Using dress-up materials and recycled props, children begin planning their own Book Week costume, talking through which character speaks to them and why.

Character Art Gallery

Children create their own artwork of favourite characters, which we display together as a growing gallery throughout August.

Extending the Fun at Home

Families can support our book week activities for children at home by reading the same book several times, asking simple questions about characters’ feelings, or helping children plan their costume together.

At Simply Sunshine Early Learning, watching children fall in love with a character and carry that story with them for weeks is exactly why we start our Book Week preparation so early.
