There is nothing quite like the smell of something warm cooking on a cold Moranbah morning. This August, Simply Sunshine Early Learning is inviting children into the kitchen with a series of cooking activities for children that blend science, nutrition, and pure hands-on fun.
Why Cooking Belongs in Early Learning
Cooking activities for children pack an extraordinary amount of learning into one simple, joyful experience. As children measure, mix, and observe, they build:
– Early maths skills, through counting, measuring, and sequencing
– Science understanding, by observing how ingredients change
– Fine motor skills, through pouring, stirring, and spreading
– Healthy attitudes toward food and where it comes from
At Simply Sunshine Early Learning, we believe cooking activities for children are one of the richest, most multi-sensory learning experiences we can offer, especially on a chilly winter day.
Our Winter Cooking Program
Vegetable Soup From Scratch
Children help wash, tear, and add vegetables to a big pot of soup, watching and smelling as raw ingredients transform into a warm winter meal.
Bread and Yeast Investigations
Watching dough rise is a genuine science lesson in disguise, and children love checking on their dough throughout the morning to see the changes for themselves.
Fruit and Vegetable Sorting
Before cooking begins, children sort ingredients by colour, size, or food group, building early categorisation and vocabulary skills.
Simple Baking
No-bake and simple baked treats let children practise measuring and following a sequence of steps, with a delicious result to share at morning tea.
Bringing Kitchen Science Home
Families can continue cooking activities for children at home with simple, safe tasks such as washing vegetables, stirring a mixture, or helping to set the table, all wonderful ways to build confidence and connection in the kitchen.
At Simply Sunshine Early Learning, our winter kitchen becomes one of the busiest, most joyful spaces in the centre, and we love watching children’s pride as they share something they helped to make.
