Surviving sickness, especially when it’s peak cold and flu season can be challenging. It’s that time of year when the weather is getting cooler and the bugs and viruses are plentiful! It’s every parent’s worst nightmare when their child gets sick, especially when everyone in the house is coming down with something. It’s not easy to rest and recover when you’re trying to look after the rest of the family, but here are some tips to help in surviving sickness at home with children.
Stay Calm and Be Prepared
Make sure you have a first-aid kit at home with all the necessary supplies, including a thermometer, pain relievers, tissues, and disinfectant, and keep a stock of essential groceries and snacks in case you can’t venture out of the house.
Accept help
Don’t be afraid to ask friends and family for help, if you can’t get out of the house ask them to drop off meals, groceries, and even activities – you can always return the favour at a later date!
Keep Everyone Hydrated
Encourage your children to drink plenty of water, and try to avoid sugary drinks, as they can make dehydration worse. If they don’t want to drink water you could try ice blocks or ice chips to help keep their hydration levels up.
Follow Good Hygiene Practices
Make sure everyone is washing their hands frequently and remind your children to cover their mouths and noses when they cough or sneeze. If you are feeling well enough, disinfect frequently touched surfaces like door handles, light switches, and remote controls. Here are some fun hand-washing songs for children.
Encourage Rest and Sleep
Getting plenty of rest and sleep is essential when fighting off sickness. Make sure your child is getting enough sleep and encourage them to rest throughout the day. Try creating a cosy, comfortable space for them to relax in, with pillows and blankets to help them feel better.
When everyone is sick you just have to do what is needed to get through the days. Surviving sickness will be challenging but it will pass!
